Maastricht & the Meuse: Castles, Caves and Border Views

This cross-border cycling route combines river landscapes with some moderate climbs and a beautiful series of historical highlights. From the fairytale streets of Oud-Rekem, you cycle towards Lanaken, where you can visit the 12th-century Pietersheim Water Castle. This peaceful, green spot feels almost timeless.

Further on, the landscape changes when you reach Kanne, known for its marl caves. Here, the limestone hills tell the story of the region's subterranean past.

Next is the grand city moment: Maastricht. You cycle into the Netherlands and follow the Maas towards one of Europe's most charming old cities, with cobblestone streets, ancient city walls and lively squares. Take your time cycling through the historic centre and pause at a pavement café on the Vrijthof or the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein. The cafés and restaurants give this route the feel of a mini city break.

If you love atmosphere, then Maastricht is the perfect stop. Think elegant streets, a lively atmosphere along the river, and that typical Maastricht blend of culture and Burgundian cosiness.
