Hoge Kempen National Park
Your cycling tour starts at Camping Kikmolen, at cycle junction 61, and soon takes you into the green heart of Limburg. You cycle towards As Station, where the striking locomotive artworks immediately set the tone for a day full of nature and heritage. From here, the route delves into the shady forest paths, heading towards Waterschei.
A definite recommendation for your journey is Thor Park. This former mining site is today a vibrant green environment where an impressive industrial past and innovation beautifully come together. Further into Genk, you'll reach Kattevennen, a place where cycling suddenly meets the cosmos. In the Cosmodrome and along the surrounding paths, you'll discover our solar system in a surprisingly fun way.
After you leave the Milky Way behind, you follow quiet forest paths towards Zutendaal. The landscape then opens up completely at Fietsen door de Heide (Cycling through the Heathland). Here you cycle over the Mechelse Heide, with vast skies and endless views. In August and September, the heather turns purple, and if you pass by in the late afternoon, the light can be truly magical.
On the way back, you cycle past the garden district and the former mine sites of Eisden. Afterwards, you enter the unique world of Terhills, shaped by the mines and softened by nature. The highlight follows when you cycle between the slag heaps via a floating pontoon bridge over an old gravel pit. This is a true 360-degree experience you won't soon forget. From there, you cycle back relaxed to Camping Kikmolen, exactly where you started.
